Valerie McMullen
Valerie McMullen, born and raised in Phoenix, AZ, was influenced by art and creativity through her father, a talented watercolorist. She graduated from Arizona State University in 1991 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art. A future career path as a flight attendant for American Airlines enabled her to travel to many cities both foreign and domestic and view firsthand the artworks of many great masters. Her husband, Jody, encouraged her to pursue her passion for painting and watercolor. Valerie strives to combine random mark-making, lines, and texture in an intuitive process that helps to reveal the forms and shapes that develop.
Valerie studied under Pennsylvania artist Nessa Grainger who exposed her to mixed media and collage which Valerie employs in her works today. Since relocating back to the Southwest, she continues to pursue her artistic training by attending such local schools as the Scottsdale Artists’ School and workshops with many talented instructors such as Stan Kurth and Timothy Rees. Valerie McMullen is a Signature Member of the Arizona Watercolor Association and a Juried Member of the Arizona Art Alliance. In 2020 she received 1st place in an abstract BoldBrush competition for her painting “Blue Lagoon”.
