allison sprock fine art Presents: A Profile on the Iconic Martin Frias
Allison Sprock has worked with Martin Frias for over 10 years. Yet many of the gallery's patrons have only heard portions of his incredible story. Today, I hope to give our community a better understanding of one of the most extraordinary artists we represent.

Martin Frias’ artistic journey began with an early interest in sculpture and painting long before photography became his primary medium. According to the artist himself, “I have always been motivated by art. I started with sculptures and painting, and then I professionalized in photography.” Frias’ deep-rooted passion for art eventually led him to explore the world of rock music photography, a field that would define much of his work in the following decades.
In the 1970s, Frias made his mark in the music world by founding Popular 1, a Spanish rock magazine that would go on to enjoy legendary status in the country. “We just celebrated 51 years, publishing a new magazine every month of every year for 51 years. In Spain, I have had a lot of repercussions in magazines, television, and all the media because a music magazine has never had this many years of life,” says Frias.

Throughout his career, he photographed some of the biggest stars in rock and roll history. The magazine became a platform for showcasing the vibrant Spanish rock scene and the global music icons who defined the era. His photos from that period remain a testament to his ability to capture the raw energy of his subjects. From Freddie Mercury to Mick Jagger, Frias’ lens often immortalized these larger-than-life figures.

Frias had a rare talent for capturing more than the performances and personalities of rock icons; he captured the essence of rock music. His relationship with rock legends like Ozzy Osbourne, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Freddy Mercury, and Robert Plant was more than just professional; it was built on a mutual respect for one another’s craft and a shared understanding of what it means to create something timeless.
Yet Frias’ circle didn’t just include rock stars; he also spent much of his time with other painters. Perhaps one of the most defining aspects of Martin Frias’ career is his close relationship with the surrealist master, Salvador Dalí. Frias often speaks about the fascinating period when he worked with Dalí, capturing the artist at home in whimsical scenes. Frias recalled their first meeting during our conversation with him,“the first time I got in touch with Salvador Dali was for Popular One”...”the first time was for an interview and some photos, which I believe you have in the gallery.” These remarkable photos are available for viewing at our Charlotte gallery.

While Frias’ photography remains one of his most iconic works, he has also established himself as a gifted painter.“Twenty years ago, I left photography and went back to painting. I have had more than 40 exhibitions in countries like the United States, Russia, France, Germany, and Italy,” says Frias. This transition marked a significant moment in his artistic career. Today, Frias’ paintings are known for their vibrant colors, rich textures, and the way they capture life and movement. His works frequently draw inspiration from his time in Spain, Cuba, and Russia, and they often explore themes of dance, performance, and the human form.
Martin Frias’ dancers, portraits, and performers have been exhibited in some of the most prestigious galleries and museums worldwide. His exhibitions have graced venues in Spain, Russia, and the United States, with significant showcases attracting art lovers, collectors, and critics worldwide. A particularly notable commission in Frias’ career was his portrait work for the Royal Family of Monaco, where he painted and photographed Princess Grace Kelly, depicting her in his iconic style.
Since then, Frias’s commanding presence in the Spanish art world has been felt through his work and his mentorship of younger artists. His time as the Art Director of the Royal Artistic Circle of Barcelona allowed him to make yet another mark on the nation's rich culture.

Whether through his rock music photography, his collaborations with iconic artists like Dalí, or his vibrant oil paintings, Frias has left an indelible mark on the art world.
With his roots deeply embedded in the world of rock and roll, his ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of visual art, and his legacy as a collaborator with some of the most important artists of the 20th century, Martin Frias remains one of the most fascinating and influential artists of his generation.
